Summary

Mr. Bradshaw does not recover from Richard’s theft and deception right away. It takes him a while to go back to work and, though Jemima hopes he will resume his relationship with Mr. Benson, he stubbornly refuses. Mr. Farquhar finds Richard a new position so that they can safely and compassionately fire him from the company. After a year in his new position, Richard seems to be doing very well at his new job and is conducting himself properly.

Mr. Farquhar also wants to pay for Leonard to attend school, but Ruth refuses, worrying about what the other boys will say if they find out he is illegitimate. Mr. Farquhar compares Leonard’s situation to how Richard grew up, worrying that being cloistered might be bad for Leonard, as he might be unable to resist the many temptations of the world once...
