Summary
In Chapter ten, Mr. Benson writes a letter notifying the Bellinghams that Ruth is extremely ill and asks Mrs. Bellingham to send a maid back to Wales to help Ruth until she can return to her friends or family. Mrs. Bellingham is completely unmoved and annoyed by Mr. Benson’s request, even after hearing Ruth’s sad backstory. When Mrs. Bellingham finds out that Ruth did not see the money that she left her, Mrs. Bellingham writes a note back to Mr. Benson informing him of the 50 pounds left for Ruth, and reiterating to him that Ruth should enter a penitentiary for fallen women, offering to place her in one nearby. Mrs. Bellingham also takes care that Mr. Bellingham does not find out that Ruth is sick.
