Chapters 3-5 Summary

On the way home from school in Chapter 3, Jessie notices that her younger sister, Katie is feeling ill. She gives Katie a piggy back ride home. After tucking Katie into bed and avoiding the questions from her siblings, Jessie runs to meet Ma at the Forbidden Rock.

Once there, in Chapters 4 and 5, Ma quickly and quietly tries to explain to Jessie that the year is not 1840. It is really 1996. Clifton Village had been created by Miles Clifton in the early 1980s as a place where people could get back to the basics and live a simple life. Ma laughs and tells Jessie that Miles Clifton could never survive in Clifton Village. He would miss his limousines too much. He wanted Clifton to be like Williamsburg, but even more authentic. Tourists could come to visit, and the villagers would not have contact...
