Good versus Evil
The primary plot throughout the entire novel is that of good versus evil. The serial killer represents the evil in the novel. The FBI agents, on the other hand, represent the good in the novel. There is a fine line, however, between the good and evil that the FBI does because even though they are supposed to be acting as law enforcement officers, the agents in the agency are blackmailing Reacher, and one of the agents turns out to be the serial killer they are investigating.
Jack Reacher even struggles with the good and evil of protecting Jodie from Petrosian and his thugs and helping the FBI to catch the serial killer. He also struggles with having to sacrifice his own wants and needs to be in a relationship with Jodie, while being a homeowner.
