Miracles

Even though Jack and Dee are not religious, Jack comes to the conclusion by the end of the novel that it was because of a miracle that he survived. Dee repeatedly tells Jack that they need a big miracle in order to survive. She does not seem to see the small miracles they are granted through their journey. The Chevy truck included in the novel is a visible symbol of these miracles.

A miracle is defined as a positive occurrence that cannot be explained by either scientific or natural laws and for this reason, is considered to be an act of God. Regardless, when Dee talks to Jack about their need for miracles to stay alive, she speaks of these miracles as if there is no hope they will actually experience these miracles.
