Discuss Sarah Polley's relationship with her mother.
Sarah Polley deeply loved her mother (Diane), and her mother loved her too. With a large family to care for and a career of her own, Polley's mother often rushed around, but she always showed Polley affection. The tragedy of the family was that Polley's beloved mother would die of cancer when Polley was eleven years old and leave the family bereft and bewildered.
Describe Polley's relationship with her father.
The relationship of Sarah Polley to her father (Michael) is problematic for many reasons. Polley's father seems to have no idea of the proper boundaries between father and daughter. He has treated his daughter as an adult since she was quite young, and he has a habit of making intensely inappropriate comments about her. This lack of boundaries coupled with a soft spot for pedophiles makes for disturbing reading.
