Summary
In Chapter 3, the helicopter brings Alisak and the other passengers to an air base, and then they board an airplane. He eventually arrives in a foreign country and is handed off to a woman. The woman informs him that they are in Perpignan, a city in southern France. The woman’s name is Karawek, Kara for short. She is originally from Thailand. She now lives in France and helps refugees, such as Alisak, settle in to their new lives in Europe. Kara brings Alisak to a farm where Alisak can live and work for the time being. The owner of the farm is Yves, the brother of the man who owned the large house in Laos. (The abandoned house that had been converted into a field hospital.) That night, Alisak has trouble sleeping, so he wanders the building. He speaks with Yves’ wife, Marta...
