Summary
In Chapter 24, Elena arrives in Maine. She has not been here since she and Joel spent a weekend at a wedding. She knows that she will never find another man to love as she loved Joel, and she does not date. She locates the Hope Faith Adoption Agency and talks to Maish Isaacson. He refuses to give her information, saying that the adoptions were closed and that family members have no right to ask for information. He then makes a slip, saying that if “one of my employees committed a fraud on us” (238), which makes Elena realize he is going to blame someone for this. When Elena pushes, he says there was nothing illegal and that the adoptions were “best for the children” (239). He says the mothers were all unwed members of a religious group.
