Chapters 20-22 Summary
Vullion basked in the coverage of the Wheatcroft killing. He continued to tape and replay the press reports as he fantasized about Annie McGowan. The media was full of reports until Monday, when the coverage just about stopped. He began his research on Annie McGowan by using computerized county tax records and reads books on burglary and knows how the Son of Sam was caught. Vullion begins to think about his car and where he should park it. After obtaining McGowan's number, he calls and says he mis-dialed when she answered. On Sunday, he drives around the neighborhood in his dark blue Thunderbird. Neither surveillance team notices him. He decides he will strike the next night.
In checking out the missing gun, Lucas visits art dealer Alan Nester who won't talk to them. They check the value of Mary Rice's remaining...
