Scones

The scones are a symbol of connection. Vivian and Malcolm met one another largely as a result of these scones. Malcolm was in the kitchen at Sycamore Cottage hoping to get some of Julia’s scones when Vivian came for coffee her first morning in London.

Selfie

The selfie is a symbol of appreciation. When Vivian received the replica of the tiara from Malcolm, she sent him a picture of her wearing it to show how much she appreciated the gift. She also appreciated Malcolm’s advice not to take the social work director position if she did not think that it would make her happy.

Miles’ Painting

Miles’ painting is a symbol of joy. Miles decides he wants to go to art school rather than Oxford because he wants to spend his life doing something that he enjoys.
