Summary

Page 147 is titled “Part II, The Woman” (147). Page 149 begins Chapter 4, now 1991. Hillary is working on editing a casebook when she hears Thurgood Marshall on the radio about to announce his retirement. Her colleague James turns on C-SPAN. Hillary is nervous about who George H. Bush will appoint to replace Marshall, and about James because she is not sure if he is a Democrat. James asks Hillary if she has seen a picture of Marshall when he was with the NAACP and says that is why he became a lawyer and Hillary thinks, “James! . . . You’re most certainly not a Republican!” (151). Marshall makes his announcement and Hillary notices James’ picture of his family of his wife and son on his desk. James asks if she is with someone special and Hillary says she does not have a boyfriend. They talk about who Bush will...
