Summary

Chapter 2 “1971” starts as Hillary explains how Bill is going to California with Hillary, and not working for McGovern (76). They get on the road, planning to stop in Park Ridge, Illinois to visit Hillary’s family. They stop first at a hotel in Akron to stay overnight, and make love, Hillary marveling at their romance. The next morning they drive to Park Ridge and Hillary gets nervous, especially about her father, thinking of his meanness. She explains how over time she had stopped taking her father’s comments personally. They park and get out, and Hillary’s brothers are excited. Her mother talks about their dinner plans, and her father says to Bill, “Your beard . . . Do you find that it makes people wonder if you’re a communist?” (79). Bill grins and says no.


Hillary drives Bill around her neighborhood and they have ice cream...
