In chapter twenty-three, Elsie and her husband are not surprised by the bullet that narrowly missed Homer Sr. However, Homer and his son are shocked when they find out that Elsie has been investing in the stock market for years and plans to buy a house in Myrtle Beach. She does not care what the townsfolk say. Miss Riley talks to Sonny about the science fair and tells him she has Hodgkin's disease but is holding her own.
