Chapter 9, Jake Mosby- Chapter 10, Miss Riley Summary and Analysis

In chapter nine, Sonny meets Jake Mosby. Jake is drunk from moonshine. Jake says, "Your dad..." and then, after pausing and repeating "Your dad...," cannot finish the sentence. Sonny finishes it for him. "I've heard my dad's a sonuvabitch when it comes to you Ohio junior engineers..." Jake laughs and says that yeah, Homer Sr. is an SOB. Sonny says, "Welcome to Coalwood," then offers Jake the paper. The company announces changes for Coalwood, related to a new coal preparation plant. It makes people nervous, they suspect a conspiracy. Homer Sr. won't outright give Sonny cement for a launch pad, but he tells him where he can find some. He is helping Sonny, without admitting to it. To open Cape Coalwood, Sonny loads Auk V with bottle-tested finely ground black powder...
