Providence
Providence, the plantation from which Rachel escapes, is symbolic of entrapment. Although Rachel successfully liberates herself from Providence, she soon discovers that the absence of physical trappings does not guarantee her psychological freedom. Providence is the tangible prison that has held her. Leaving it, forces Rachel to confront the intangible prisons of her own mind.
Pier
The Bridgetown pier is symbolic of the future. While sitting on the pier, Rachel is able to watch the ocean and the boats landing and leaving. These images place Rachel into confrontation with the life that might await her beyond Bridgetown.
Mama B
