Barbados

Barbados is the Caribbean nation from which Rachel originates. This is also where the events of the novel's opening chapter "Barbados, August 1834" are set. Barbados has been Rachel's home for her entire life. However, it is not until she flees Providence plantation at the novel's start, that she is able to explore and experience the island outside the context of bondage.
