Summary

In “Trinidad, August 1835,” Chapter 30, Rachel and her companions arrived in Port of Spain, Trinidad. They settled into an inn. Rachel spent her days wandering the streets in search of Cherry Jane. Then one day, she saw her daughter through a window. She was dressed in fine clothing.

Rachel found Cherry Jane waiting for her at the quay. Her “dress and demeanor” surprised Rachel (248). Although they hugged, Cherry Jane was eager to go. She told Rachel everyone believed she was “the daughter of two prominent free mulattoes in Bridgetown” (249). Rachel felt hurt. When she told Cherry Jane that Mary Grace was with her, Cherry Jane agreed to meet them at the inn in the morning.
