Summary
In Chapter 10, the longer Rachel stayed in Bridgetown, the more her other children haunted her. She started spending her “Sunday mornings” on the local pier (66). She learned that the boats went to Jamaica and Trinidad.
One day, Rachel and Mary Grace encountered Hope in the street. They invited her into the shop. Hope was an eager and enthusiastic customer. That evening, Joseph confronted Rachel. He knew Hope’s occupation and wondered if Rachel had worked for her. He worried about tainting the business’s reputation. Rachel assured him she had only ever been “a field hand,” but feared Joseph disliked her (71).
