Summary

Chapter 45 returns to the previous scene of Hiram. He sees the man on the bridge (whom the reader now knows to be Uncle King) with his two children. The train quickly approaches, and Uncle King throws his two children down into the river to try to protect them. They do not survive the fall. Chapter 46 shifts to the Loggins brothers on the fourth day of their journey. Hunter recalls giving the eulogy at his father’s funeral; the eulogy was loving and charitable despite its implications towards his father’s faults. They find an abandoned boat with a drawing of the Altamaha-ha, likely drawn and left there by Uncle King. Chapter 47 returns to 1565. Laudonnière’s foraging mission yielded little.
