Summary
In Chapter 34, Hiram has just returned home after the storm. His boat had been destroyed by the storm. Hiram is emotionally crushed, as the boat represented his future income and most of his savings. In an impulsive rage, he hits Lawton, who is six years old. Yet, he feels a deep love for his sons that he has difficulty expressing verbally. Chapter 35 returns to the French expedition. They manage to fend off the Potano. Le Moyne shoots and kills at least one Potano soldier, and he feels deep grief and shame. After the expedition escapes, they see the sails of a ship on the river. Chapter 36 returns to the Loggins brothers. Lawton speculates that the rumored Slavic men may be illegal poachers.
