Summary
Chapter 11 returns to Hunter and Lawton. It is the evening of their first day on the river. As they find a spot to camp, they talk about women. The narration briefly digresses to exposit upon the social history of the area, starting at the Great Depression. Lawton and Hunter point out to each other how polluted the river has become. Chapter 1564 returns to 1564. Satiurwa arrives at Fort Caroline with hundreds of armed men. He speaks with Laudonnière, who apparently had promised that at this time, they would join forces to fight the Utina. Laudonnière says that he will need two more months to prepare. Saturiwa, disappointed, goes off with his men to fight the Utina. Chapter 13 returns to Hunter and Lawton. It is the same evening as before.
