The Pomegrante Seeds

In Ripe, the pomegranate seeds serve as a symbol for Cassie’s pregnancy. The night she contemplates telling the chef she is pregnant, he opens a pomegranate and removes the jeweled seeds. As they sit on the couch, she imagines raising a child with him but reminds herself that they do not have a plausible future. The next morning the seeds are shriveled on the kitchen table. In the same manner that the fruit withers, the tenability of carrying the pregnancy is not viable.
