Summary

Part IV takes place in a town called Watts, which Kev says is a “Sponsored” (133) community. The parole board used an algorithm to determine where he would be sent and he was given a home and a job as a mechanic. A computer chip was implanted in his thumb that would track his movements. When he arrived at his new home, he did not have a key to open the door. A neighbor named Calvin, also on parole, suggests he place his thumb on a touchpad on the door, and when he does so, the door opens. Calvin tells Kev he is not in prison anymore.

Kev goes to the mechanic's shop where he is working as an apprentice. The mechanics weld and work on the prosthetic limbs of residents of the community. One man with a prosthetic says that he works for...
