Hatred
Hatred is the most prevalent and important theme in the novel. Hatred has been around throughout human history, and it is shown strongly through the evil acts of the slave trade and the slaver holders in general. But what happens to hate when it is allowed to take over? That is the question that Clark explores in this novel.
Maryse is constantly tempted by hatred. The weapon her Aunties give her, her sword, is filled with memories of all those who suffered before her. The aunties gave her this so that she could be in touch with the plight of her people, but it also worked to Butcher Clyde’s advantage.
