Summary
Chapter 3 begins with the three women at Frenchy’s Inn which is described as a “a mix of Mississippi juke joint, rum shops they got in St. Lucia, and spots… seen in Cuba” (57). The character of Lester is introduced. He is interested in Sadie, but she is not interested in him. She had sex with him once, and she says she will never sleep with any man twice.
Bessie is introduced, and she and Chef are interested in one another “in the way of lovers rediscovering their familiarity” (57). Then Maryse notices Frenchy. He is from St. Lucia. He traveled through the West Indies and South America before he opened up the inn in Macon. The two have a sexual relationship.
The group starts discussing Marcus Garvey. Lester explains that Garvey believed Black people should go back to Africa and claim what is rightfully theirs...
