Dominoes
The dominoes are symbols of disaster. Annemarie compares the disasters she has suffered in her life to a row of dominoes that have fallen. She believes the first domino that fell was the riding accident that killed her horse and badly injured Annemarie. The next three dominoes fall 19 years later. The first falls when Annemarie loses her job. The second falls when Roger announces he is leaving her. The third falls when she learns her father has been diagnosed with ALS.
Box of Tissue
The box of tissue is a symbol of loss. Even before Annemarie’s boss has told her what is happening, Annemarie suspects she is being fired when she sees her boss pulling out a box of Kleenex.
