Summary
In Chapter 1, Annemarie Zimmer is riding her brindle horse, Highland Harry, in a jumping competition that could take her to the Olympics. She knows she has won first place when Harry clears that last jump, but something does not feel right as Harry lands. Annemarie sees the ground coming toward her before she blacks out. She is in and out of consciousness, hearing voices and the sound of helicopter blades.
In Chapter 2, three weeks after the accident, Annemarie learns Harry is gone. His pastern, the largest bone between his hoof and foreleg, shattered when he landed. He was shot on the course because there was nothing anyone could do for him.
