Summary

The man holding the pitchfork asked Charlotte who she was and what she was doing in his stable. He asked if she had been cleaning the stalls. Charlotte told him she had just moved to the area and her parents had sent her to town to find work. She asked if she could work for free in exchange for a place to sleep and food. She offered to clean the bridles and said she could ride. He agreed to let her stay but said he would be moving the stables to Rhode Island in a few months. He introduced himself as Ebeneezer Balch, then sent her to the café to eat.
