Part 3: Chapter 8 Summary
Milly Campbell hears a siren coming from the direction of the Wheelers' house, and has a strong sense that April is in trouble. Mrs. Givings calls to ask Milly what happened at the Wheelers' where she's seen the ambulance, but can get no one to answer the phone. Extremely agitated if for no other reason than the fact the Wheelers' children are still at her house, Milly Campbell calls her husband Shep at work to see if he can help. Shep makes phone calls to the hospital, the ambulance company, and around town with military efficiency and finds that, yes, April Wheeler has been admitted to emergency for uncontrolled bleeding following a miscarriage. He calls his wife to inform her, then calls Frank Wheeler in New York and gets him out of a conference to give him the news. Shep tries...
