Summary
In Chapter 43, Jo Ellen asks Raymond to help her talk to those who will be gathered at Freedom House. She reads from a school book that Americans came from Europe, but points out that they came from many countries, including Africa.
Chapter 44 is from Sunny's perspective. Mr. Bayard explains that this community is known as Gritney. Polly's mother takes the girls inside because she apparently feels that is the safer option at Freedom House.
Page 313 is the title page for part 3, titled Engagement. The next 17 pages are images and quotes, including lines from a song that read, “Summer's here and the time is right for dancin' in the street” (316). There are photos from the summer's work, including volunteers in several towns in Mississippi.
