Miriam Horton is 15-years-old during the summer her family sets out for another revival season. Her father is Reverend Samuel Horton who is a sought-after healing preacher. Along with her mother Joanne and her siblings Caleb and Hannah, Miriam is excited about the possibilities of the summer months. The family will travel across the South, preaching at various places in the hope of spreading God's word. Samuel heals those who reach out to him.
The one concern Miriam has is whether word of an incident the previous season might hurt the turnout. Samuel had become frenzied when a young pregnant girl called him a fraud. In his rage, he shoved her down and pounded the ground with his fist. He claims that striking her in the stomach was an accident. Miriam's fears appear to be unfounded as crowds turn out for the first day of the new revival. When a mother brings her son forward on crutches, Samuel tries to heal him. The boy is able to stand afterward, which everyone considers a success. Only later does Miriam wonder if the event was as miraculous as it seemed at the time.
In Bethel, North Carolina, a drunk, blind man, calls Samuel a fake. Outside the tent, Miriam watches Samuel brutally beat the man. The next night, they are chased out of the revival. Samuel refuses to say he did anything wrong. When they return to their home church – an enormous building with Samuel as pastor – Miriam's friend Micah collapses. Miriam instinctively prays the healing prayer over Micah. Both are shocked when Micah regains consciousness. Samuel prays over Micah in the ambulance. At the hospital, the doctors announce there is no sign of diabetes in Micah's medical tests. Samuel takes credit for the healing though Micah and Miriam know the truth. Miriam is afraid to speak out, knowing that Samuel believes only men can use spiritual gifts. Over the coming months, Miriam secretly heals three other girls and a baby born on the brink of death. Samuel becomes increasingly angry, especially after Micah's diabetes returns. By the time the family sets out for another revival season, the church membership has declined dramatically, and Miriam has completely lost faith in her father. There are also very few invitations for Samuel to preach services that summer.
Miriam decides she is going to force Samuel to acknowledge her gift by healing Hannah (who has cerebral palsy) in a very public setting during a revival service. Her plan falls apart when Hannah is not healed. Miriam runs away, breaking her leg and a rib in the process. Samuel demands that Miriam stop healing people. The novel comes to an end as Miriam opens her mouth to answer.
