The Search for Purpose
While George didn't actively look for a way to have an out-of-body experience, he seems to be questioning his purpose even before the event. That's seen in his reaction to the montage of scenes that flash before his eyes as he first encounters Jesus. As he watches his life, he begins searching for what positive things he's done. While he quickly points out that he became an Eagle Scout, he just as quickly realizes that he was the one to receive the honor - the reward. George soon admits that he is judging his life much more harshly than Jesus but seems to continue in this search for a greater purpose to his life. When he knows that he's going to be returned to his earthly body, he is distraught, wanting to remain instead with Jesus. This isn't the only time he wishes for this...
