Part 2, Chapter 18 Summary
Merivel is busted for the special relationship he has created with Katherine. She apparently loves him, but Merivel feels only pity for her and the selfish desire to cure her to show that it can be done. Ambrose sets guidelines for his seeing Katherine. He can visit her for one half hour per day with no night visits.
The six Keepers plan a dance for the patients, and Daniel (on the fiddle) and Merivel (on the oboe) are to provide the music. They rehearse in front of the other staff, to the others' delight. The first date for the dance is rained out, the "dance floor" becoming too muddy, but on June 30 the dance goes forward.
