Chapters 5-6 Summary
Kiriel discusses the origin of his name. He likens it to the sound of the Greek prayer "Kyrie eleison" which means "Lord, have mercy." The name actually means "mirror of souls," which is the role he plays as a devil come to earth. He says that his function is to echo back a soul's regret, so that a soul will feel the full burdens of guilt, shame, and sorrow, and by letting people know that their sins have been witnessed by someone. But in Shaun's body, Kiriel no longer has to mirror things back since he can now cast his own reflection. At the end of his first day as a human, Kiriel starts feeling sleepy for the first time; he worries that he will be taken back to hell while he sleeps, or maybe disappear completely. But he decides there...
