Summary

In Chapter 9, narrated by Kenna, Kenna has been turned down for six different jobs because she is a felon. The seventh place at which Kenna applies is a grocery store where she meets the shift manager, Amy, hiding in the bathroom. Amy is not concerned when Kenna tells her that she has just been released from prison. She gives her an application for a part-time job as a bagger.

As Kenna is filling out the application, Ledger sees her and begins talking to her. Kenna asks him to leave her alone so he will not destroy her attempts to get the job. Amy asks Kenna if Ledger is her boyfriend. She comments he is sought after since he broke off the marriage with his fiancé.
