Summary

In “Day 1,309 of My Captivity,” Marcellus discusses his intelligence. “I hear everything,” “I can use tools. I can solve puzzles” (74). But he does not understand the idiom that humans use to describe him, “smart cookie” (74).

In “Maybe not Marrakesh,” Cameron opens the box Aunt Jeanne gave him of his mother’s possessions. He finds a bag of jewelry, and though “nothing conjures even an ounce of warmth toward his mother,” it is “worth pawning anyway” (80). Then he finds a photo of his mother as a teenager with a man he doesn’t recognize, and a class ring engraved “SOWELL BAY HIGH SCHOOL, CLASS OF 1989” (80).

In “Bugatti and Blondie,” Tova meets Adam Wright while doing a crossword at Hamilton Park. He recognizes her because he went to school with Erik. After he leaves, she wonders what he might know about her son’s disappearance...
