Chapters 7 through 17 Summary
D'Agosta is visited by a female officer named Sergeant Laura Hayward, who tells him that there may be a connection between the Wisher murder and several murders of those living underground. D'Agosta tells her she should have followed the chain of command and she says that her own boss is not interested. D'Agosta finally realizes that he should follow up on the information and agrees that he, Hayward, and her boss, a man he calls Waxie, should go into the tunnels to the sites where the other bodies were found to see if they can make any connection. They find the head of one of the victims and are attacked by those who live in the tunnels. Waxie panics, but they all manage to escape with Hayward carrying the head.
