Summary

Chapter 19 – The night of the Parting Ball arrives. Maven tells Mare that what must be done, must be done or there will never be any change. At the ball, the king compliments how ladylike Mare has turned out. Mare meets Ptolemus, head of the Archeon city guards and one of the intended targets. Mare also sees Reynald Iral, cousin of Sonya, who is a financial genius. Colonel Macanthos will not be an easy target, due to her courage and her cunning. Belicos Lerolan is a diplomat who serves in Piedmont. He is a father and is warm and friendly. It causes Mare to feel bad for what is going to happen to him.
