Madagascar
The island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa is the primary setting for most of the individualized narratives within the book. The facts that it is populated by Black people of African heritage, that life there is defined by spiritualities and values associated with nature and tradition, and that there is significant tension between indigenous citizens and persons who are either colonizers or holiday-makers all play significant roles in defining story and theme throughout the book.
The Red House
The Red House is the unofficial name given to the vacation home constructed by Shay and her husband Senna on Madagascar. As described in the narrative, its design consists of elements from various cultures and architectural concepts, with its name coming from the rich red of the floor in its entryway. Much of the action of the book takes place in and around the House.
