Summary
CMO and 4NO argue about their differing interpretations of Homer. 4NO imagines himself on a talk show, answering the same questions. He sets up chairs for a performance; Ida helps him prepare. Sad enters the room disoriented, and 4NO seems concerned. He sees Sad’s future and feels overwhelmed by it. Sad walks around, feeling and talking to the chairs. Later, elderly people from the clinic with mental conditions such as dementia and insomnia enter the rec room to watch 4NO’s play. In a lapse of reason, Sad charges toward Ida, but a trembling man intervenes, giving Ida a chance to kick Sad backwards. Ida continues to sing her part in the play. 4HO regrets his decision to stage it. The crowd, however, starts to sing along with Ida.
