Summary
Chapter 3 opens with Iris at Oberlin college. Living in an all-black residence hall, she reflects on the dreams she has for her future, notably they are "alone" (38). There is a picture of Aubrey and Melody on her desk, and it makes her realize how she already practically left them. She wanted to come back to college to get away from everyone, "far away from everybody needing some part of her," but she has found that making friends at school is quite difficult, as everyone seems "younger" (39). She remembers when she found out that she was pregnant, and how it seemed as though everyone knew before she did. When her mother, Sabe, discovered her pregnancy, she was distraught, but Iris defiantly claimed "I'm keeping it," wanting some sort of control in her life (41). However, this appears to contrast what she thought of her future...
