The Skull
The skull serves a s symbol for the island’s sordid past. In the same manner that the beaches physically hold human remains, the island holds the history of murder, cannibalism, and starvation. While the shores and water appear idyllic from a distance, they bely the horrific events that happen on shore over the decades.
The Rope
The rope that Lux finds dangling from the tree serves as symbol for survival. When she sees the twine, she is unsure if it was created as a trap for animals or people. The author suggests that survival mode leads individuals to make decisions that they would not under socially normative circumstances. Whoever placed the rope was driven by a desire to survive; seeking to catch food, or foil the plots of others who could endanger them.
