Summary

In Chapter 7, Lux sees red on the horizon as the sun rises and knows that a storm is approaching. The air gets colder and within “hours, the sky goes so dark it almost feels like night” (69). Nico orders Brittany and Amma to stay below deck while he and Lux prepare to navigate the craft through the rocky waters. As the waves crash around them, Lux helps Nico steer the wheel against the “incredible pull of ship and sea” (70). She sees Brittany emerge from the cabin door and releases her grip on the wheel to get the other woman back inside. However, the boat lurches and Lux loses her footing. She feels the lifeline, attached to her waist, snap. Her foot is over the edge of the craft when the Susannah rights itself. When the wind dies down, Nico seems indifferent to her...
