Part 3: Chapters 4-5 Summary
In chapter 4 of part 3, Bruce looks at one of the letters. He recognizes his own handwriting and knows the letter was written after his visit home for Chet's funeral. Bruce had been unable to come home for Christmas, but made the trip in January when Chet succumbed to pneumonia after helping a man dig his car out of the snow one wintry day. Bruce spent as much time with Nola during that visit as he could but found her desperate for more of his time. Bruce tried to remind Nola that they would have months together over the summer, but it seemed to do little to lift her spirits.
