Friendship
Friendship is a major and dominant theme in the novel "Reason to Breathe" by Rebecca Donovan. Friendship involves mutual affection, loyalty, and caring between two or more people. Friendship occurs at various places throughout the novel, but most notably between Emma and Sara. Their friendship has very positive effects on them, and also has some drawbacks as well.
In terms of positive effects, Emma's friendship with Sara means having someone to talk to about her horrible home life, about life, love, and dreams for the future. Sara is, in turn, very protective of Emma, taking care of her, and protecting the secrets of Emma's home life. It is their friendship that helps to balance out the horrible aspects of Emma's existence, and Emma later says that without Sara, she couldn't exist.
