Summary

As Chapter 4 continues, Wallace feels hurt and frustrated by Roman’s comments, as well as by the other students’ willingness to ignore racism simply to avoid discomfort. Wallace then says that he saw Vincent’s profile on the dating app by chance. Vincent is evasive at first. Cole, acting like he did not already know about Vincent’s dating profile, presses Vincent on the subject. Vincent says that he made an account purely out of curiosity. However, Roman then makes a comment that implies that Vincent recently had sex with someone other than Cole—possibly Roman. An argument breaks out. Wallace, overwhelmed, leaves the room. Wallace has also observed that Emma and her boyfriend Thom may be in conflict. Miller joins Wallace in the other room. Wallace points out that no one stood up for him against Roman.
