Summary

Part Three takes place in 2030 and is told from the perspective of Lily’s mother Mae, sometimes referred to by the Americanized version of her name: May. In 2030, Mae lived in San Francisco. She sometimes called Lily on the phone to hear her voice but would hang up without saying anything. Mae regularly followed Nick around San Francisco, where he now worked, observing his life but not revealing to him who she is. One day in a grocery store, Nick noticed Mae after she knocked over some boxes of hair dye. Nick helped Mae to pick up the boxes but she didn’t say anything to him, assuming he would think that she did not speak English. Two weeks passed without Mae seeing Nick and she worried she has lost him and won’t be able to observe him anymore. Then one day...
