Summary
In “Unexpected Turns,” Francisco was worried when his Western Civilization teacher announced that any misspelled words on the regular essays would mean an automatic D. The teacher mispronounced Francisco's last name, but he did not correct him. The English professor, Dr. James Quinn, assigned a paper on a Virginia Woolfe essay. Francisco began working on it immediately, including doing research on the author. He wrote several drafts and borrowed Smokey's typewriter for the final draft. Smokey took only a short time to type up his paper. Dr. Quinn gave Francisco a D on his paper, saying he had written too much about the author and not enough analysis of her work. (Francisco was more dismayed to discover that Smokey made an A.) Dr. Vari returned another of Francisco's assignments with a C. Francisco began to worry...
