The Rare Breed

The Rare Breed symbolize prejudice; the reader can consider Grayson and the other members as intolerance incarnate. Gerald orchestrates Isiah’s and Derek’s murder, but it is the Breed that actually kill them. In nearly all of Ike’s interactions with the Breed, Grayson or some other member direct racial epithets at him. They are also described as a white-supremacist gang. The Breed is homophobic as well. They refer to Derek and Isiah with homophobic terms, and ridicule Tangerine’s transgender sexuality as well. Through the novel, the Rare Breed present as a violent gang, the members of which disdain all minority groups. They are a one-dimensional archetype of intolerance and can thus be understood as a symbol for racism, homophobia, and general intolerance.
