Ike Randolph
Ike Randolph is one of the two main characters in the novel. He joins efforts with Buddy Lee to investigate the murder of their sons; Ike’s son, Isiah, was married to Buddy Lee’s son, Derek. Ike is an ex-convict, having served time in prison for manslaughter, though his thoughts reveal he was guilty of murder. Prior to his son’s murder, Ike led the life of a law-abiding citizen, operating a successful landscaping outfit. He relapses into criminal behavior as his and Buddy Lee’s investigation develops.
Through the novel, Ike reflects with remorse upon the relationship he had with Isiah when he was alive. Ike did not accept Isiah’s homosexuality, and their relationship was strained. As the investigation develops, Ike encounters various people who knew Isiah. He gains an understanding of Isiah that he did not have and becomes more open-minded and accepting...
